Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrived in Malaysia on Sunday for an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in key sectors between the two countries.
The visit, undertaken at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, marks Tarique’s first official bilateral trip abroad since taking office in February 2026.
Tarique, accompanied by his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and other members of his delegation, landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 at 8.33pm aboard a commercial flight.
Upon arrival, he was accorded a static guard of honour mounted by the First Battalion Royal Ranger Regiment at the Bunga Raya Complex (BRC), KLIA. The contingent was led by Captain Mohd Masrur Hidayat Masri.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Zulkifli Hasan was on hand to welcome the Bangladeshi leader.
On Monday, Tarique is scheduled to receive an official welcoming ceremony before holding bilateral talks with Anwar at the Perdana Putra Complex.
The meeting is expected to focus on reviewing the progress of Malaysia-Bangladesh relations and identifying new opportunities for collaboration in areas such as trade and investment, human resource management, semiconductors, energy, agriculture and education.
Both leaders will also witness the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cultural cooperation, as well as two exchanges of notes covering counter-terrorism research and investment promotion and facilitation.
Bangladesh is Malaysia’s 28th-largest trading partner globally, with total bilateral trade reaching RM12.18 billion. Within South Asia, Bangladesh is Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner, export destination and source of imports after India.
The visit underscores the commitment of both countries to deepen strategic cooperation and further enhance their longstanding partnership.
