‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ Singer Bonnie Tyler Dies at 75

Welsh singing legend Bonnie Tyler, best known for her 1983 power ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart, has died at the age of 75.

Her family and management confirmed in a statement that Tyler died at a hospital in Portugal due to complications from an illness.

Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins in 1951, rose to international fame with her distinctive husky voice following vocal cord surgery in the late 1970s. She achieved global success with Total Eclipse of the Heart, which topped the charts in the UK and the US and earned a Grammy nomination. The song surpassed one billion streams on Spotify earlier this year.

She was also known for Holding Out for a Hero, featured in the film Footloose, and represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 with Believe in Me. In 2023, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to music.

Tyler is survived by her husband, Robert Sullivan, whom she married in 1973.
