Universal Music Malaysia has handed over RM367,305.19 in royalties to the family of the late legendary singer Sudirman Arshad as part of ongoing efforts to preserve and promote his musical legacy.
The payment was received by Sudirman’s nephew, Razman Azrai Zainuddin, also known as Atai, on behalf of the family during a ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, Kosmo reported.
Universal Music Malaysia managing director Kim Lim said the payment reflects the company’s responsibility to Sudirman’s heirs as well as its appreciation of his contribution to Malaysia’s music industry.

“Sudirman was an icon who helped shape Malaysia’s music landscape and left behind a cultural treasure of immense value,” she said.
“As the holder of his music catalogue, it is our responsibility to ensure royalty payments continue to be channelled to his family while preserving and reintroducing his music to new generations.”
Lim said the process took nearly two years, involving audits and verification of royalty statements in consultation with the family.

She added that while Universal Music owns the copyright to Sudirman’s songs, other recordings such as competition footage and live broadcasts are held by different entities.
The company also plans to digitise and expand Sudirman’s catalogue on streaming platforms, including restoration of audio recordings, reissues of classic works and broader licensing initiatives.
“We want Sudirman’s songs to continue being heard, appreciated and remain relevant across generations,” she said.
Lim added that more of his works will be made available on platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube as part of the digital expansion effort.
The initiative also involves Universal Music and EMI Music Malaysia working to ensure his catalogue remains accessible and relevant for future audiences.
In a related development, Razman said a biopic on Sudirman is being planned for release by 2028.
He said the film would not only highlight Sudirman’s personal journey but also Malaysia’s rise in international music recognition.
“This is a film about how the country placed local music on the world map,” he said, adding that auditions will soon be held to cast actors for the production.
