The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar and several major currencies today ahead of Malaysia’s second-quarter 2026 GDP announcement.
At 8am, the ringgit rose to 4.0835/0895 against the greenback from 4.0850/0890 at Thursday’s close.
Malaysia’s 2Q GDP is expected to grow by 5.8 to 5.9 per cent, supported by stronger manufacturing and mining performance.
An economist said a better-than-expected GDP figure could support the ringgit. Softer US inflation and weak jobs data may also reduce the chance of a US rate hike.
The ringgit was higher against the yen, pound, Singapore dollar and Thai baht, but lower against the euro. It was little changed against the Philippine peso and Indonesian rupiah.
