Renowned philanthropist and lawyer V. Jeyaratnam has passed away at the age of 101.
His daughter, Ratnamalar, said Jeyaratnam died of natural causes at his home on Thursday (June 4) at 7.34am.
A highly respected figure in both the legal and charitable sectors, Jeyaratnam founded Yayasan Sultan Idris Shah in 1982. The organisation, now known as Yayasan Ipoh, has long provided rehabilitation and support services for children with disabilities.
Jeyaratnam also served as chairman of the Perak Turf Club for 22 years. His lengthy tenure earned him recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records as the longest-serving chairman of a turf club in the country.
He is survived by his three children, Jeyarajah, Jeyamala and Ratnamalar, as well as two grandchildren, Shankar and Jeyanthi.
His wife, Dr Rajamalar Jeyaratnam, passed away in 2008 at the age of 78.
Jeyaratnam leaves behind a lasting legacy of philanthropy, public service and dedication to the welfare of children and the wider community.
