Over 400 Cats Saved From Slaughter as Vietnam Busts Pet Theft Syndicate

More than 400 cats believed to be destined for the meat trade have been rescued in Vietnam after authorities dismantled an alleged pet theft and trafficking syndicate.

According to local police, nine people were arrested following raids in Tay Ninh Province and Ho Chi Minh City last week. Officers recovered more than 400 live cats, around 80 dead cats stored on ice, and an additional 21 cats at a separate facility.

Investigators said the group allegedly specialised in stealing and collecting cats from across southern Vietnam before transporting them to holding centres and selling them to traders.

Animal welfare organisation Humane World for Animals said about 40 rescued cats have since been reunited with their owners, although some animals later died due to the conditions they endured.

The organisation praised authorities for their swift action and is providing food and supplies for animals being held as evidence while investigations continue.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing and urged pet owners who believe their animals were stolen to come forward and help identify the recovered cats.

Vietnam legally permits the consumption of dog and cat meat, although traders are required to obtain permits verifying the animals’ origin.
