Two minor earthquakes measuring magnitude 2.9 struck Sabah and Sarawak less than 12 hours apart on Tuesday, with tremors felt in several areas across both states.
According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the first earthquake occurred in Ranau, Sabah, at 10.36am at a depth of 10km. Tremors were reported in Kundasang, Ranau town and Kota Belud.
A second quake struck Mambong, Sarawak, at 10.33pm the same day, also at a depth of 10km. Residents in Samarahan and Serian reported feeling the tremors.
MetMalaysia director-general Hisham Anip said the department would continue monitoring the situation and provide updates when necessary.
“The public need not be concerned as the earthquakes were of minor magnitude,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
No injuries or property damage were reported following either incident.
Ranau is among the most seismically active areas in Malaysia. In June 2015, the district was hit by a magnitude-6.0 earthquake that claimed 18 lives, including students and teachers participating in a school expedition on Mount Kinabalu.
