Veteran Mandopop singer-songwriter David Huang, also known as David Wong, has died at the age of 61.
His death was confirmed by his elder sisters, Consulina Wong and Joann Wong, in a statement released through Taiwanese law firm Chen and Chen Law Office on Sunday (Jun 14).
According to the family, Huang passed away unexpectedly on June 2 while staying at his sister’s home in Honolulu, Hawaii. The cause of death remains unknown.
The family described Huang as a musician whose talent and passion touched generations of fans, while appealing for privacy as they make funeral and posthumous arrangements.
Born in Hong Kong in 1964 and raised in Hawaii, Huang became one of Mandopop’s most influential figures, earning a devoted following through hits such as Intoxicated and Love Breaks Everyone’s Heart. Widely regarded as a pioneer of the genre, he was known for blending Western rock influences with Mandarin pop music and was affectionately dubbed the “Godfather of Rock” by fans.
Throughout a career spanning several decades, Huang received numerous accolades, including the Golden Melody Award for Best Arranger, and was celebrated for his distinctive vocals and elaborate musical productions.
Tributes have since poured in from across Taiwan and Hong Kong’s entertainment industries, including from actress and filmmaker Shu Qi, as fans and fellow artists mourn the loss of one of Mandopop’s most iconic performers.
