Veteran playback singer K. Jamuna Rani, one of the iconic voices of South Indian cinema’s golden era, died in Bengaluru yesterday at the age of 88.
She had reportedly been suffering from age-related health complications in recent days. Her passing has left the film industry and music fans mourning the loss of a legendary singer.
Born in Andhra Pradesh in 1938, Jamuna Rani made her singing debut at the age of seven in the film Thyagayya. During her distinguished career, she recorded more than 6,000 songs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Sinhala.
Among her best-known songs are “Yaaradi Nee Mohini” from Uthama Puthiran starring Sivaji Ganesan, and “Paattondru Ketten” and “Singaara Punnagai” from Pasamalar, which remain popular with audiences.
Her funeral and cremation are scheduled to take place in Bengaluru today.
Film personalities and political leaders have expressed their condolences, describing her death as the end of a golden era in South Indian film music.
