14 Malaysians Held Overseas for Alleged Drug Smuggling After Departing KLIA

Fourteen Malaysians have been arrested overseas for alleged drug smuggling after departing from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) between January and July this year.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Commissioner Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the group comprised 11 men and three women.

Taiwan recorded the highest number of arrests, with six Malaysians detained, followed by Indonesia with three, the Philippines with two, and Hong Kong, Macau and the Maldives with one each.

A total of 73.17kg of drugs worth RM5.5 million was seized in the overseas cases.

During the same period, police also foiled drug smuggling attempts at KLIA, arresting 51 people and seizing 1.2 tonnes of drugs worth RM97 million.

Hussein said British passport holders made up the largest group arrested at KLIA, with 14 people, followed by Malaysians with 12, Singaporeans with eight and French nationals with five.

He said the 14 Malaysians arrested overseas accounted for about seven per cent of the total arrests made in connection with drug smuggling attempts at KLIA.

Hussein said police continue to highlight drug seizures to raise public awareness and warn Malaysians about syndicates offering travel incentives or payments to persuade them to transport drugs.

The effort aims to prevent Malaysians from becoming involved in drug smuggling activities.
