Malaysia’s K. Letshanaa saw her impressive run at the Indonesia Open come to an end after a straight-games defeat to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in the second round on Thursday.
The world No. 31 put up a spirited fight against the world No. 3 and three-time world champion but ultimately fell 21-15, 21-18 at Istora Senayan.
Letshanaa stayed within touching distance of her highly-rated opponent for much of the second game before Yamaguchi pulled away in the closing stages to secure victory.
It was Yamaguchi’s second win over the Malaysian, having also emerged victorious in their only previous meeting at the Thomas Cup Finals in April.
Despite the loss, Letshanaa can take plenty of encouragement from her maiden Super 1000 campaign. She began her Indonesia Open journey with an impressive victory over Denmark’s Line Kjaersfeldt in the opening round on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season, highlighted by a semi-final appearance at the Indonesia Masters in January and a quarter-final finish at the Malaysia Masters, where she claimed a notable win over Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki.
Although her Indonesia Open campaign has ended, Letshanaa’s performances continue to underline her growing potential on the international stage.
