Teen Missing After Being Swept Away by Waves at Batu Linting Beach

A 15-year-old boy is feared drowned after being swept away by strong currents while swimming with his family at Batu Linting Beach in Kuala Penyu today.

The incident occurred at around 5:00 p.m. The victim, identified as Jason Alexander Jonathan from Kampung Kiaulu, Tuaran, was reported missing after being carried out to sea by powerful waves.

Beaufort District Police Chief, Superintendent Champin Piuh, said the victim was swimming with family members when a strong current suddenly pulled him into the sea.

“The victim’s younger brother attempted to rescue him but was unsuccessful before the victim was carried away by the current.

“The younger brother, who also sustained injuries, was later taken to Kuala Penyu Hospital for treatment,” he said when contacted tonight.

He added that a search and rescue (SAR) operation is currently underway involving the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM), the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM), local villagers, fishermen, and the area’s elected representatives.

“Members of the public who find or have information regarding the missing teenager are urged to contact the police immediately or inform personnel at the Incident Control Post,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kuala Penyu Fire and Rescue Station Chief Zulhalim Abdin said the department received an emergency call at 5:22 p.m., after which a team of nine firefighters was dispatched to the scene.

“Upon arrival, the rescue team was informed that two children were believed to have drowned while swimming at the beach.

“However, one victim, aged 13, was successfully rescued by family members, while Jason has yet to be found.

“Search operations are being carried out along the shoreline and on the water surface, but efforts have been challenged by strong wave conditions.

“As of tonight, the victim remains missing and the SAR operation is ongoing,” he said.
