Parents and students in Serian welcomed the reopening of schools after a three-day closure due to unhealthy haze conditions.
A total of 107 schools in the Serian division, involving eight secondary and 99 primary schools, were temporarily closed after the Air Pollutant Index exceeded 200, reaching a very unhealthy level.
The closure was extended until Friday as a precaution, even after the API fell below 200.
During the closure, home-based teaching and learning was carried out to help students continue their studies. Some parents said online learning was challenging, especially when students needed direct help from their teachers.
Parents also expressed relief that air quality had improved, allowing their children to return to school in safer and more comfortable conditions.
The state Education Department announced on Sunday that schools in Serian would reopen the following day.
