Thirty cannons believed to belong to the Kedah Sultanate have been found in Trang, southern Thailand, more than 200 years after they were believed to have been taken during the Musuh Bisik War.

Kedah, Perlis and Penang History and Cultural Association vice-president Mohd Herman Roslan said the cannons, most weighing about 5.44kg or 12 pounds, were found near temples and government offices in Trang.

He said the cannons were originally placed at Kota Kuala Kedah before they were believed to have been seized by Ligor forces during the war between 1821 and 1842.

Historical records estimate that 123 cannons were used to defend Kota Kuala Kedah during the Siamese attack. Only two remain at the fort today.

Herman said the association believes between 50 and 60 more old cannons linked to the Kedah Sultanate may still be located in southern Thailand.

He said the discovery showed that Kedah once had a strong military force and defence strategy, with cannons strategically placed around Kota Kuala Kedah to defend against attacks from land and sea.

The association hopes the government will support further research and efforts to locate the remaining cannons.
