Mcnulty Becomes First Us Road Race World Champion Since Armstrong

Brandon McNulty surprised the favourites in the absence of his team captain Tadej Pogacar to become the first American men’s road race cycling world champion in 33 years, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

McNulty broke with 33 kilometres left and it helped his cause that the top stars such as Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel of Belgium, Isaac del Toro of Mexico, and rising Frenchman Paul Seixas joined forces too late to catch him.

McNulty held on to win the race over 273.4 kilometres ahead of Australian Michael Matthews and Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel.

The last American to win the men’s road race at the worlds was Lance Armstrong in 1993. 

McNulty won the Tour of Poland and the Montreal World Tour last year. He also has stage wins at the Giro d’Italia and Spanish Vuelta. 

Superstar Pogacar was not riding at the Montreal worlds because of injuries he sustained recently at the Vuelta.
