A 28-year-old man has been charged with murder after allegedly driving under the influence of drugs in a three-vehicle crash that killed two teenage girls on Jalan Padang Tembak in Teluk Intan last Sunday.
The accused, Alex Robert, who works in Singapore’s private sector, is alleged to have caused the deaths of 17-year-old Nur Dania Arissa Salim and 16-year-old Nur Atikah Abdullah on the main road near Sekolah Menengah Sri Setia.
Alex Robert was brought before Magistrate Naidatul Athirah Azman. No plea was recorded as the murder charge falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
If convicted, he faces the death penalty or up to 40 years’ imprisonment and caning under the Penal Code.
He also faces two additional charges for allegedly injuring a seven-year-old boy and a 50-year-old man after hitting them with his car in the same incident.
A urine test confirmed that the accused had consumed the drug benzodiazepine on the day of the crash.
The case has been postponed to September 11 for further proceedings.
