A BMW 7 Series driven by a man holding a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card was among 145 vehicles seized by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) during a special enforcement operation targeting luxury vehicles.

The vehicle, driven by a man in his 30s, was impounded after authorities found that its road tax had expired. The car was stopped last week while decorated with ribbons in preparation for a wedding ceremony.

Negeri Sembilan JPJ Director Jasyindar Singh Sidhu said a total of 870 vehicles were inspected under Op Luxury, which has been conducted since the beginning of the year.

Of the 145 vehicles seized, many were high-end models, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota Alphard, Lexus and BMW Limousine vehicles.

“Throughout the operation, seven luxury vehicles driven by foreign nationals were seized, involving individuals from China, Pakistan and Bangladesh, including a UNHCR card holder,” he said in a statement on Friday.

He said the operation focused on compliance with valid road tax, insurance coverage and driving licences, as well as unauthorised vehicle modifications and other offences under the Road Transport Act 1987.

Jasyindar stressed that owning a luxury vehicle does not exempt anyone from enforcement action.

“We will continue to increase the frequency and intensity of enforcement operations involving luxury vehicles through patrols, roadblocks and technical inspections to ensure full compliance with road transport laws,” he said.
