A 20-metre section of Jalan Semabok–Ayer Keroh has been closed to traffic following the formation of a sinkhole caused by a burst water pipe.
The Melaka Tengah Public Works Department (JKR) said the incident occurred at about 9am on Wednesday near the traffic lights at Masjid Bukit Bayan along Section 3.4 of Federal Route 264.
According to the department, the sinkhole was triggered by a ruptured water pipe belonging to Syarikat Air Melaka Berhad. Weather conditions were reported to be fair at the time of the incident.
As an immediate safety measure, warning signs and traffic diversion notices have been installed around the affected area.
Motorists are advised to use the alternative route via Jalan Demang Husin along Federal Route 264 until repair works are completed and the road is reopened.
The update was jointly issued by the Melaka Tengah Public Works Department and road maintenance concessionaire Selia Selenggara Selatan Sdn Bhd.
