Six people were killed and another was seriously injured after the Proton X50 sport utility vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in was involved in a collision with a tipper lorry carrying soil at Kampung Baru Pinang Tunggal yesterday.
Ahmad Shafiq, who was a police officer attached to the Seberang Perai Selatan District Police Headquarters (IPD), was driving the Proton X50 belonging to his younger brother Ahmad Fahim, which had been newly purchased and collected just hours before the accident.
The family was believed to have been on their way to Merbok to visit their late father’s grave.
Following the incident, the 49-year-old lorry driver was detained by police to assist investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
