Rosmah Ordered to Pay US$14.6M in Jewelry Case

The High Court is set to rule today on a US$14.57 million (RM68.3 million) lawsuit filed by Lebanese luxury jewellery firm Global Royalty Trading SAL Ltd against Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor over the alleged loss of 44 high-value jewellery items supplied on consignment.

Justice Datuk Quay Chew Soon is expected to determine not only Rosmah’s liability but also whether the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Malaysian government, named as third parties in the suit, should bear any responsibility or contribute to damages awarded to the plaintiff.

Global Royalty claims the jewellery, which included diamonds, rings, bracelets, earrings and a tiara, was delivered to Rosmah for viewing purposes but was never returned. Rosmah has maintained that the items went missing following police raids at Pavilion Residences in 2018 linked to investigations into the 1MDB scandal.

During the trial, the court heard testimony from Global Royalty’s managing director, Rosmah, and several police officers. Evidence showed that police seized numerous bags and boxes from an unoccupied unit during the raids, while CCTV footage allegedly captured the items being moved there shortly before the operation.

The court was also told that only one of the 44 jewellery items — an emerald diamond bracelet — was recovered and later returned to Global Royalty. The company alleges Rosmah falsely claimed all the jewellery had been seized by authorities and argues that responsibility for the missing items should not be shifted to the Malaysian government.
