A 40-year-old lorry driver has been commended in Parliament after his quick thinking helped bring a runaway express bus to a stop, saving 21 passengers in a dramatic incident near the Menora Tunnel in Perak.
The driver, Wong Tuck Meng, was presented with a special commendation and a RM10,000 cash reward for his heroic action during proceedings in the Dewan Rakyat today.
The incident occurred on June 15 near the Menora Tunnel when the bus reportedly suffered brake failure and lost control. Realising the danger, Wong used his lorry to deliberately slow the bus by positioning his vehicle at the rear, allowing both vehicles to come to a safe stop.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke officially recorded the incident in the parliamentary Hansard, praising the driver’s presence of mind and bravery.
The RM10,000 reward was presented by the Malaysian Road Safety Council in recognition of his life-saving action.
Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Ramli Mohd Nor, along with Members of Parliament present in the House, also expressed their appreciation for Wong’s swift and courageous response.
