Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup journey ended in disappointment after Portugal suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the round of 16, with Mikel Merino scoring a late winner to send the European champions through.
Despite the heartbreak, Ronaldo refused to make an immediate decision about his international future, saying he needed time to reflect.
“I’m sad to be leaving the World Cup like this. I gave it my all and I leave with a clear conscience,” Ronaldo said. “It was my last World Cup, yes, but I won’t be making any rash decisions.”
The 41-year-old forward said Spain had some luck with their late goal and believed the match could have gone either way.
Ronaldo also stopped short of confirming whether he had played his final game for Portugal, insisting he did not want his personal decision to overshadow the team’s campaign.
The Al-Nassr striker highlighted his achievements with Portugal, including winning the 2016 European Championship and two Nations League titles, saying he was proud of his contribution to the national team.
Portugal’s World Cup exit also marked the end of Roberto Martinez’s time as head coach. Ronaldo praised the Spaniard, describing him as “a great manager and a great human being.”
“It’s always sad to be knocked out of a major tournament, but we can hold our heads high,” Ronaldo added.
