Motorcyclist Dies After Six Days in ICU, Rohingya Driver Remanded

A Rohingya man has been remanded for three days until June 5 to assist in investigations into a road accident that claimed the life of a motorcyclist at Kilometre 12.5 of the Kuala Terengganu–Kuantan Road near Kampung Rusila on May 27.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Noor Mazrinie Mahmood after allowing a police application to facilitate further investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Marang District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Sofian Redzuan said the incident occurred at about 6pm when the 27-year-old victim was riding a Yamaha RXZ motorcycle from Kuala Terengganu towards Rusila.

He said the victim was believed to have collided with a Proton Saga driven by a 20-year-old Rohingya man who was making a left turn along the same route.

The motorcyclist sustained severe head and leg injuries and was rushed to Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) in Kuala Terengganu for further treatment.

“However, the hospital confirmed that the victim died on June 2 while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“Following the victim’s death, the case, which was initially investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving, has been reclassified under Section 41(1) of the Act for reckless or dangerous driving causing death,” he said.

Mohd Sofian added that police have seized the vehicles involved and urged anyone with information about the incident to contact investigating traffic officer Inspector Nik Nur Farhanim Nik Mohamed Fauzee at 09-618 2222.
