Indonesian authorities have rescued a mother orangutan and her approximately one-year-old baby from a fire-affected peatland area in Central Kalimantan.
The two orangutans, named Raya and Rayu, were rescued on Wednesday night after authorities received information about an orangutan trapped in the area.
During the rescue operation, however, officers discovered that there were actually two orangutans — a mother and her young.
The operation was challenging due to darkness, limited visibility and the heavily burned condition of the area.
Footage showed the baby clinging tightly to its mother while both animals were examined and treated by rescuers.
Both orangutans were later taken to a clinic for further observation and health checks.
Authorities said they would be released back into their natural habitat after completing the necessary examinations.
Indonesia has been experiencing forest fires in several areas, with thick smoke affecting parts of Borneo and Sumatra. The haze has also spread across neighbouring countries, including Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.
