The Department of Islamic Affairs has rejected the airing of drama series “Madu atau Racun”, following concerns over content said to touch on religious sensitivities and local cultural values.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Senator Dr Zulkifli Hasan said the government was concerned about elements in the drama that could conflict with Islamic teachings and Eastern cultural values.
He said protecting family values, religious conduct and the moral development of young people remained important.
Zulkifli added that the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) would work with relevant agencies to review the drama’s content and consider further action based on existing guidelines and laws.
The review will refer to JAKIM’s guidelines on screening Islamic-related broadcasting content, he said.
He also urged artists, producers and broadcasters to be more responsible when producing content and to follow official guidelines.
Meanwhile, the drama’s director, Eyra Rahman, previously said the 12-episode series did not contain excessive or “daring” scenes and was produced within existing guidelines.
The controversy has attracted attention online, with viewers debating the drama’s themes and portrayal of relationships.
