KL City Hall Studying Road Closures to Create Safer Night Running Routes

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is exploring the possibility of temporarily closing several major roads between 10pm and midnight to provide safer recreational spaces for runners in the capital.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Hannah Yeoh, said the initiative is modelled after the KL Car-Free Morning programme and aims to identify areas with lower traffic volume that could be safely designated for night-time running activities.

As part of the pilot phase, roads surrounding Dataran Merdeka and Sultan Abdul Samad Building have been proposed for the programme. Representatives from running clubs will also be invited to assess existing pedestrian and running routes.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said discussions will be held with police on the possibility of allowing runners to use certain routes as early as 5.30am.

The proposed initiative is part of efforts to promote a safer and more runner-friendly environment in Kuala Lumpur while encouraging healthy lifestyles among city residents.
