A total of 989 students from 25 schools in Labuan have been identified as facing difficulties attending school, with transportation among the main contributing factors.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said, as an initial step, 437 students from six schools will receive assistance through the Student School Transportation Facility.
The initiative involves cooperation between the Federal Territories Department, Labuan Corporation, the Labuan Federal Territory Education Department, schools, Parent-Teacher Associations and the Labuan Mini Bus Operators Association.
Hannah said the programme aims to ensure transport difficulties do not prevent students from attending school.
She stressed that some children want to attend school, but their journey to school has become a barrier.
“Their future should not be stalled simply because getting to school is difficult,” she said in a Facebook post.
The initiative is expected to help improve school attendance and reduce the risk of students missing out on education due to transportation difficulties.
