National weightlifting star Muhamad Aznil Bidin made history by becoming the first Malaysian weightlifter to win gold at three consecutive Commonwealth Games after claiming the men’s 65kg title at the Glasgow 2026 edition. The 32-year-old described the achievement as the proudest moment of his career and said it fulfilled his long-held dream of winning a gold medal hat-trick.
Muhamad Aznil also set three new Commonwealth Games records with lifts of 133kg in the snatch, 166kg in the clean and jerk, and a total of 299kg. He improved each of the three records twice during the competition, while India’s Raja Muthupandi won silver and Papua New Guinea’s Morea Baru took bronze.
The Malaysian said his strategy was to secure the gold medal first before attempting heavier lifts. He added that his next goals are to prepare for the Asian Games and qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. His victory came after teammate Mohamad Aniq Kasdan won gold in the men’s 60kg event, helping weightlifting become Malaysia’s biggest medal contributor on the third day of the Games.
