A unique combination of soft-serve ice cream and fresh oysters has gone viral in Japan, drawing curious food lovers to Michino-eki Yamada, a roadside rest stop in Yamada, Iwate Prefecture, according to Oddity Central.
The unusual dessert has become one of this summer’s biggest attractions, with visitors flocking to the location to sample the one-of-a-kind treat.
The soft-serve ice cream is made from creamy milk and topped with fresh oysters harvested from Yamada Bay. It is then finished with a drizzle of specially made soy sauce, creating an unexpected blend of sweet, savoury and briny flavours.
The combination has been described as a surprising mix of fresh seafood, creamy sweetness and the salty richness of soy sauce, offering a taste unlike any traditional dessert.
Photos and videos of the oyster ice cream have spread rapidly across social media, leaving many users stunned by its unusual appearance. Some even believed the dessert was generated by artificial intelligence (AI), rather than being a real menu item.
“This has gone beyond the realm of desserts!” one user wrote on X.
“The creativity of the Japanese knows no bounds!” another commented.
Michino-eki Yamada is expected to continue selling the oyster-flavoured soft serve throughout the summer.
Priced at 600 yen (approximately RM15) per cone, the dessert is considered reasonably affordable for those eager to experience one of Japan’s latest culinary curiosities.
Japan is no stranger to unconventional soft-serve creations. Previous offerings have included matcha-coated ice cream and even soft-serve served inside a bowl of ramen, highlighting the country’s love for inventive dessert combinations.
