Former national cyclist M. Kumaresan has been appointed Chairman of the Cycling Expert Panel under the Olympic Sports Development Programme, a newly established initiative by the National Sports Council of Malaysia (NSC) aimed at strengthening cycling talent development at the state level from this year.
Kumaresan, the first Malaysian cyclist to qualify for the final of the men’s points race at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, is expected to spearhead efforts to produce a new generation of world-class riders through a more structured, performance-driven development pathway.
Joining him on the expert panel are several distinguished figures in Malaysian cycling, including former London 2012 Olympian and current national endurance coach Amir Mustafa Rusli, national sprint coach Harnizam Basri, and former Le Tour de Langkawi standout Mohd Harrif Saleh.
The panel also comprises Malaysian National Cycling Federation (PKBM) Vice President Firdaus Arshad, National Sports Institute (ISN) representative Mohd Izham Mohamad, and Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) representative Abdul Hadi Abdul Rahman.
Among its key responsibilities are overseeing a comprehensive athlete development pathway—from talent identification to elite performance—while shaping long-term development strategies, monitoring the progress of athletes and coaches, assisting in the selection of athletes and training centres, and providing guidance on sports science and high-performance programmes.
NSC Director-General Jefri Ngadirin said the panel’s wealth of experience and expertise would play a crucial role in strengthening Malaysia’s cycling development ecosystem and accelerating the emergence of future international-calibre cyclists.
