US President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey on July 19 and will jointly present the trophy to the winning team.
The announcement was made by Gianni Infantino during an interview broadcast on Tuesday.
“We will be with the president to enjoy the final and, of course, present the trophy together to the champions,” Infantino said.
Infantino has maintained close ties with Trump and previously presented a special FIFA peace award to the US leader during the World Cup draw ceremony in Washington last year.
The joint trophy presentation follows controversy surrounding the FIFA Club World Cup trophy ceremony involving English club Chelsea FC after their victory over Paris Saint-Germain in New Jersey.
During the ceremony, Trump handed the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James but remained on stage after the presentation, joining the players during their celebrations.
The moment attracted widespread attention as Trump was seen standing among Chelsea’s players, who appeared surprised by his presence during the team’s victory celebrations.
