Police have arrested a teacher and a student in connection with a murder case filed over the death of a class eight student at Farid Ahmed Bhuiyan Academy School and College dormitory in Ramganj upazila, Lakshmipur.
The arrested individuals are Shariful Islam, 48, the dormitory superintendent, and Sajidul Islam Majumder, 19, a higher secondary student of the institution. Police said they were detained during overnight raids in different areas of the upazila.
Lakshmipur Superintendent of Police Md Abu Tarek said operations are ongoing to arrest other suspects linked to the case.
The victim, 14-year-old Mehedi Hasan, was found dead in the dormitory on June 16. His family alleged that he was beaten by senior students over accusations of stealing a mobile phone.
His body was discovered hanging, with visible injury marks on his back and neck. The incident triggered unrest, with a mob later vandalising the school’s main gate and several rooms.
On June 18, the victim’s father filed a case at Ramganj Police Station, naming the institution’s principal, seven students, and 10 unidentified individuals. The complaint alleges that Mehedi was severely assaulted over suspicion of stealing an iPhone.
At the time of the incident, Shariful Islam was serving as the dormitory superintendent and was later appointed acting principal after the removal of the former principal following the incident.
In an earlier statement, the school authorities acknowledged that Mehedi was subjected to physical and mental harassment by a group of higher secondary students in the dormitory on the night of June 15. They also stated that the alleged abuse may have caused severe psychological distress leading to his death.
