A 35-year-old delivery worker was sentenced to six months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court on Friday after pleading guilty to assaulting his wife during an argument over unpaid house rent.
Mohamad Norkholis Idris Imam Muryadi admitted to two charges before Magistrate Arun Noval Dass.
According to the charges, the father of three intentionally injured his 32-year-old wife by pushing her against a wall at a storage facility in Parit Raja at about 9am on June 13.
He was also charged with causing further injuries by punching the victim in the face and head while they were inside a car parked outside their residence about 30 minutes later.
The offences were framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A, which provides enhanced penalties for causing hurt against a spouse.
Based on the case facts, the incident began with a verbal argument after the accused became angry when his wife repeatedly urged him to settle outstanding rental payments.
Police arrested the suspect at about 1.35pm on the same day at the Batu Pahat District Police Headquarters to assist in investigations.
Investigators found that the couple had previously lived in a rented house but later moved into a rented room after failing to keep up with rental payments.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Firdaus Ruslan led the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer Heng Eng Gee from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK).
The court sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment for each charge, to run concurrently from the date of arrest.
