Malaysia to Crack Down on Illegal Racers, Tonto Groups With Tougher Laws

The government will table amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 next week, introducing tougher penalties for illegal street racing, tonto activities and other serious traffic offences.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the proposed amendments will also strengthen digital enforcement through technologies such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), enabling authorities to detect road tax, insurance and licensing offences without stopping vehicles.

The amendments will cover 42 clauses across 11 areas, including measures to improve road safety, enhance enforcement powers and address emerging transport issues.

Loke said proposals to increase fines will apply only to selected serious and repeat offences, with a transition period of at least two years if approved.
