The United States and Iran have reached a framework agreement aimed at ending their months-long conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, with a formal deal expected to be signed in Switzerland on Friday.
The breakthrough, facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar, will extend the ceasefire reached in April and launch a 60-day negotiating process focused on resolving key disputes, including Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief.
US President Donald Trump hailed the agreement as a major step towards peace, while Iranian officials confirmed the deal but stressed that implementation would only begin after the signing ceremony.
The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor, is expected to ease pressure on international oil markets and support regional stability.
Despite the progress, significant challenges remain, particularly over Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium and the future of its nuclear programme, which will be central to the next phase of talks.
