Family considerations have become the top priority for veteran goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat as he weighs his options for the upcoming season.
After spending nearly five years away from his family following his move to Sabah FC in 2022, Khairul Fahmi, better known as Apek, is now looking at opportunities with clubs in Peninsular Malaysia for the 2026-27 campaign.
While he has yet to decide on his next destination, the former Kelantan goalkeeper remains determined to prove that he is still capable of competing at the highest level despite being 37 years old.
“There are several offers for next season, but I will choose the one that allows me to be closer to my family because they have sacrificed so much for me during my time in Sabah and endured being apart for a long period.
“Now it is my turn to make sacrifices for them. At the same time, I still want to play and prove that I am capable of performing, even at the highest level.
“For me, age is not a barrier to competing. We can see goalkeepers in leagues overseas who are still playing in top-flight competitions at the age of 40.
“My motivation now is also my family because they have always supported me and encouraged me to continue playing,” said Khairul Fahmi.
Since the 2022 season, Khairul Fahmi has made 65 appearances across all competitions and recorded 17 clean sheets.
