Young Mother Pleads Guilty to Causing Death of Newborn Daughter

A young mother pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of causing the death of her newborn baby girl last month.

The accused, Nuran Batrisya Jamaludin, 22, appeared calm and nodded in understanding as she entered her plea after the charge was read out by a court interpreter before Judge Mohd Zamir Suhaimee.

According to the charge sheet, the accused was alleged to have caused the death of a baby girl with the intention of inflicting bodily injury that was likely to result in death.

The offence was allegedly committed at the parking area of the Rajawali Block, Melana Indah Phase 2 People’s Housing Programme (PPR) Flats, Taman Sutera Utama, between 11am and 2.30pm on May 20.

She was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 30 years and a fine upon conviction.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor R. Nevina did not offer bail to the accused.

However, the unmarried woman appealed for bail, citing her responsibility to care for the victim’s twin sibling and her family dependants.

The court granted bail of RM20,000 with two local sureties and imposed additional conditions requiring the accused to surrender her passport to the court, report to a nearby police station monthly, and refrain from interfering with witnesses.

The case was fixed for mention on July 3 for the submission of documents and sentencing.

Previously, media reports stated that a local woman was arrested after allegedly throwing her newborn baby girl from the 10th floor of a flat, resulting in the infant’s death.

The suspect, who is the baby’s biological mother, was arrested at about noon yesterday at the compound of Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) here.
