Budget 2027 will focus on improving economic security, wages and career opportunities for Malaysia’s younger workforce, Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong said.
He said empowering young Malaysians was important to maximise the country’s demographic advantage, with half of the population aged below 31.
“We want Gen Z and those around our median age of 31 to feel their jobs are secure, their wages are sufficient, and that they have clear upward mobility,” he said.
Liew also said Malaysia must take greater advantage of the global artificial intelligence boom by moving from being an assembly hub to becoming a creator of high-value technology.
He said the country should shift from “Make in Malaysia” to “Make by Malaysia”, particularly in the semiconductor and data centre sectors.
Budget 2027 will also focus on strengthening national supply chains, fiscal stability and social safety nets amid growing global uncertainties, including conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
Targeted measures will also be introduced to support traditional micro-retailers facing competition from foreign e-commerce platforms.
The budget is also expected to include initial strategies to address Malaysia’s long-term ageing population.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to table Budget 2027 on Oct 9
