Magnitude 6.6 Earthquake Strikes Southern Philippines, No Major Damage Expected

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Monday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The quake was recorded about 164 kilometres southeast of Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental province at a depth of 86 kilometres. Authorities said no significant damage is expected.

Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said the earthquake originated along the Philippine Trench and is not linked to the magnitude 7.8 quake that struck Mindanao on June 8, noting that the two epicentres were more than 250 kilometres apart.

The latest tremor comes as recovery efforts continue following last week’s powerful earthquake, which has claimed at least 65 lives, with 36 people still reported missing, according to the country’s civil defence agency.
