A US government employee assigned to the US Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar, has been found dead in the country’s largest city, according to the US State Department. Officials confirmed the death but did not release further details, citing respect for the privacy of the family.
Diplomatic sources in Myanmar said the man was discovered about two weeks ago at the Sakura Residence & Hotel, a long-term stay facility frequently used by diplomats and international visitors, located near the US Embassy.
The sources also said that authorities are treating the case as a possible homicide, and that a Thai woman has been taken into police custody in connection with the investigation.
The incident comes amid ongoing instability in Myanmar, where the military government continues to face armed resistance following the 2021 coup that removed elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
